Life In Pune

The word Pune is derived from Sanskrit word Punya Nagari meaning the CITY OF VIRTUE, which itself speaks volume about the city with a glorious history of nearly 1600 years. Pune is fondly referred to as the “Queen of Deccan”, “Oxford of East”, “Cultural Capital of Maharashtra”, “Student Capital of India”.

Pune’s education facilities have led to Pune’s emergence as a prominent location for IT, ITES and manufacturing companies to expand. The Hinjewadi IT Park, IT Park in Nagar Road and Aundh are host to companies like Infosys, Wipro, KPIT, Tata Consultancy etc. Some of the major manufacturing activities in and around Pune include automobile, electronics, appliances, metal forging/casting etc. Some of the major employers include Daimler-Chrysler, Telco, Bajaj Auto, Cummins Diesel, Bharat Forge, LG, Kirloskar etc. Foreign giants including General Motors, Volkswagen, Fiat have set up Greenfield facilities near Pune; making the independent cite Pune as India’s “Motor City”. Pune has the largest metropolitan economy and the highest per capita income in the country.

Great legends in the Indian history unfolded themselves here-of brave warriors of staunch patriots of great social reformers; of artists, artisans and artists of great talents; of saints, sages and savants excelling in spiritual teachings and cultural renaissance – to make Pune a “synthesis between modern science and ancient wisdom”. As the orientalism flourished, modern science made a deep impact on the social thoughts, the literacy works portrayed the reality of life, and creative thinking and imaginative ideas became a passion with the people.

The one-time seat of the great Maratha power three centuries ago, Pune today is a place of educational advancement, technological prosperity and cultural exchange. The infinite skyline, which years ago was surrounded by picturesque Sahyadri ranges of the Western Ghats, Pune is your quintessential student city. With pleasant weather all the year round a landscape punctuated by impossibly green hills, a pulsating nightlife, eating points that sells everything from Italian Cuisine to ‘Vada Pav’ and multiplexes that host worldwide premiers, Pune has something to offer for everyone. And for the more culturally inclined, Pune offers a host of classical music concerts, an internationally acclaimed film festival, historical landmarks and architectural marvels that bear testimony to the city’s unique culture. As a student, you will find yourself right at home among approximately seven lakh students who come from all over the world to study at the Oxford of the East.
